Rebecca Hopp has lived a life of serving others. She began her political service as a write-in candidate for the City of Ferrysburg’s City Council in 2009. Serving 8 years as a council member and Mayor Pro-Tem, in 2017 she was elected Mayor.
She has proven to be dedicated and committed to serving the residents of Ferrysburg and Northwest Ottawa County. As Mayor, Rebecca initiated the first ever strategic plan for Ferrysburg, approved live streaming of council meetings, created the annual Arbor Day Celebration and received the City’s first Tree City USA accreditation. Her connection with the community is represented in her creation of the 4th of July poster contest for area children, “Cops and Cones” community event and the city’s first ever community playground build. Rebecca recently researched, completed the application process, and was awarded with Ferrysburg’s first Michigan Historic Marker to honor the city’s first African American landowner, Hezekiah Smith.
In addition to her position as Mayor, Rebecca has served on state and local boards, including: Vice President of the Michigan Association of Mayors, President of Tri-Cities Historical Museum, Vice Chair for Ottawa County Land Bank Authority, Ottawa County Brownfield Redevelopment Board, and Ottawa County Community Action Agency Board. Rebecca previously served as President of Michigan Women in Municipal Government, President of the Elected Official Academy, and as a Michigan Municipal League Board Trustee. She has also volunteered her time with the Girls State program, teaching young women the importance of government service.
Rebecca Hopp’s dedication to Ottawa County is reflected in her willingness to volunteer to help meet the needs of our community serving as a volunteer with the Ottawa County United Way, Ottawa County Emergency Center, and as past President of the Four Pointes Center for Successful Aging. She was actively involved during the 2020 spring flooding in Northwest Ottawa, where she filled and moved sand bags for several days to help mitigate the flooding in residential areas. At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mayor Hopp personally reached out to over 500 area residents, 70 years old and older, to check in, meet their needs, and answer questions. Rebecca and her husband, Jack, are the creators and Co-Chairs of the Annual Smith’s Bayou Chili Cook Off, which has raised thousands of dollars for local nonprofits in Northwest Ottawa County.
A life-long resident of Ottawa County, Rebecca Hopp’s public service runs deep. She created new initiatives throughout our community, demonstrated her willingness to work hard and is dedicated to getting tough jobs accomplished. Residents can frequently see her mowing lawns, raking leaves and cleaning gutters for our older residents, putting her commitment to public service into action.
